We are fortunate to have the support of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the Lymphatic Filariasis Eradication Programme among the Korowai. Our thanks go to Doctors W Beeri and Made S Gapar of the WHO in Sentani. They generously provided the medication for the eradication programme during the second medical expedition in 2015.
As part of both their global and national programmes, the WHO have embarked on an eradication programme among the Korowai living in villages. However, they recognise that Tribal Survival are uniquely well-positioned to complete this programme among the Korowai still living traditionally in tree houses in the jungle. These people fall outside any recognised census and so have not previously been part of the programme.
There are over 150 million tribal people living in more than 60 countries worldwide. Of these, at least 70 ‘uncontacted’ tribes continue to live with little or no interaction with outsiders.
